many of the FM1 and 2 era cars have pretty inaccurate proportions which still exist today.
increasing poly count doesn't fix anything if the shape is wrong in the first place

I do agree on the R32, looks a bit like a plastic toy car, the Bugatti EB110 has the same feel in that aspect.
But might have more to do with the paint texture than the polygons (or both).
