Japan’s Empress Michiko is leading royal efforts to end the ill-fated “engagement” of her oldest grandchild to a commoner,
before the world’s longest-reigning monarchy heads into the turbulence of an abdication.

The royal family has had enough of the saga of Princess Mako, 27, and Kei Komuro, a law student, who is also 27.
It wants the matter resolved before the end of February when Japan celebrates the 30th anniversary of Emperor Akihito’s enthronement.
That will be a harbinger of more elaborate rituals when Akihito, 85, abdicates on April 30 ? the first emperor to step down
